The Music Docent program is a great way to expose students to, and build an appreciation of, musical genres our students wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to on the radio or the internet.
Our classes have enjoyed their first music docent lesson at Sierra Hill School. They studied Grieg’s “In the Hall of Mountain King”. Classes TK-3rd used a variety of engagement techniques, each developmentally appropriate for the grade level. Students hear the music, watch symphonic videos, move to the music, and discuss and even act out the feelings and plot of the score. Students are also introduced to musical vocabulary: composer, conductor, and theme. A couple docents even dressed up as trolls to engage the students.
